Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met today with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo. Secretary Blinken and President El-Sisi reaffirmed their strong commitment to the U.S.-Egypt strategic partnership and cooperation on a range of regional and international challenges.

The Secretary commended President El-Sisi for Egypt’s important role in promoting stability in the region, discussed ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, noted the importance of unified international support for holding elections in Libya, and underscored the importance of the Framework Political Agreement to the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people. The Secretary expressed the United States’ solidarity with Egypt as it contends with the economic impact of Russia’s brutal war in Ukraine; he also underlined U.S. support for Egypt’s home-grown economic reform agenda, as well as for the International Monetary Fund program underpinning its implementation. The Secretary and the President discussed efforts to further cooperation on economic prosperity for the benefit of the Egyptian and American people. The Secretary also emphasized that the bilateral relationship is strengthened by progress on human rights. The Secretary reiterated U.S. support for a diplomatic resolution on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam that would safeguard the interests of all parties.
