Europe Day – United States Department of State

On behalf of my fellow Americans, I am pleased to join citizens across Europe in celebrating this year’s Europe Day.

Today we commemorate the vision of Robert Schuman, who sought to prevent wars among nations by ensuring the people of Europe shared a united and prosperous future.  In 1950, this vision took the shape of the European Coal and Steel Community.  When forming this community, Schuman and others commenced a process that would lead to the European Union, bringing security and prosperity to its people and promoting democracy and peace across Europe and on the world stage.  In celebrating Europe Day, we recognize the flourishing result of decades of democratic achievement.  This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Marshall Plan, when U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall launched a pioneering program to help rebuild countries across the continent, generating a resurgence of industrialization and investment in the region.  We are proud of the enduring partnership between the United States and Europe and of the accomplishments we have achieved together based on our shared values.

While war has returned to European soil again, the United States is proud to partner with European allies and partners to support the brave people of Ukraine in defending themselves against Russia’s invasion.  Our coordinated support to Ukraine over the past year highlights the strength of the transatlantic relationship.  Together, the United States and Europe will continue to work together to forge a prosperous and free future for Ukraine and countries around the world.

This Europe Day, I send my congratulations and best regards to the citizens, member states, and institutions of the European Union.  Happy Europe Day!
